That compilation wasn't just happening while he was awake. On October 15, 2021—three and a half years after his accident—Matt mentioned that he had his first dream. At the time, I wasn't sure if it indicated anything of note. A quick search later confirmed that late-stage dreaming is a true milestone of cognitive reorganization—a sign that his brain had moved beyond basic structural repair to running complex internal simulations, consolidating memory, and integrating new language patterns during REM sleep. A silent wonder settled around me, as the sheer magnitude of this revelation slowly seeped into my subconscious, justifying my instincts and underlying drive.
Reaching that level of neurological synthesis, however, took immense groundwork. The challenge lay squarely within his TBI and compromised self-awareness; he didn’t choose this, and he had never been this way before. Still, the evidence was undeniable: as his decoding reached an eighth-grade level, his delivery developed a natural inflection, and his Composite Reading Score surged from 71.5% in March 2021 to a remarkable 92%.
